Skiing in Georgia: Everything You Need to Know
- from a local ski expert
Irina Beniaidze
Founder & Ski Expert at Ski Holidays
Hi, I'm Irina. I've been here in Gudauri for more than 12 years. In that time, we've opened our own ski school, equipment rental and an ice rink, and worked alongside mountain tourism agencies from around the world.

Now I put that experience into building ski trips - for families and for companies - so you get a holiday that's actually planned by someone who lives on this mountain, not just booked through it. This page is everything I'd tell a friend planning their first Georgia ski trip.

Ok, Is Skiing in Georgia Worth It?
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
Yes - and it's not close. Georgia's Caucasus Mountains deliver genuine alpine terrain, consistent snowfall from December through April, and none of the queues you'd fight through in France or Austria.

Three resorts anchor the scene:

  • Gudauri - the largest and best-equipped resort, with roughly 35km of pistes and terrain running up to 3,276m. The obvious choice for most visiting families.
  • Bakuriani - gentler, lower-altitude, popular with local families and total beginners.
  • Mestia - remote and dramatic, built for backcountry and heli-skiing rather than resort skiing.

For a first ski holiday to Georgia - especially with kids in tow - Gudauri is where nearly every trip I plan ends up, and where our packages are built around.

When to Go Skiing in Georgia?
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
The season runs from late December to April, with January to March offering the most dependable snow and open terrain. Middle December can be hit-or-miss while the base builds, and by New Year the resort is usually running at full capacity.

If you want the widest slope access and the best snow quality with the least early-season risk, aim for mid-January onward.

Gudauri vs Bakuriani vs Mestia: Which Ski Resort in Georgia Is Best?
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
Gudauri vs Bakuriani - Gudauri wins on terrain, snow reliability, and infrastructure; Bakuriani wins on being gentler and better suited to absolute beginners and very young children. Most families flying in for a proper ski week choose Gudauri.

Gudauri vs Mestia - Gudauri is the resort-skiing choice: groomed runs, lifts, ski-in/ski-out stays. Mestia is for experienced off-piste and heli-skiing enthusiasts, not a typical family holiday.
For UAE, UK and South African families wanting one base with everything nearby - slopes, restaurants, childcare-friendly accommodation - Gudauri is the best ski resort in Georgia, and it's the only one we build packages around.
Guests:
Is Gudauri Good for Beginners and Families?
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
Very much so. Gudauri has dedicated learning slopes, gentle green runs away from the main traffic, and ski schools used to teaching first-timers of all ages. Because the resort still isn't crowded by European standards, beginners get far more room to actually learn.

We stay in New Gudauri, where most of the restaurants, cafés and family-friendly apartments are concentrated, and where accommodation is largely ski-in/ski-out - no dragging kit and kids across the resort each morning.

Getting to Gudauri from Tbilisi
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
Gudauri sits about 2–2.5 hours from Tbilisi International Airport, along the Georgian Military Highway - a scenic, well-maintained mountain road.
Kutaisi Airport is a further option, roughly 5.5 hours away.

Every Ski Holidays package includes a private transfer straight from Tbilisi Airport (or your Tbilisi hotel) to your Gudauri accommodation - no shared shuttles, no waiting around after a long flight.

Ski Rental and Lessons in Gudauri
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
Not travelling with your own gear? No problem - ski and snowboard rental is easy to arrange in Gudauri, with equipment for every level from first-timers to experienced skiers, and children's sizes readily available.

For lessons, Ski Gudauri ski school is well set up for beginners and families, with patient, experienced instructors used to teaching guests who've never clipped into skis before. As a qualified ski instructor myself, I only work with instructors I'd put my own family with - no random pairing on the day.

Every Ski Holidays package can include rental and lessons booked in advance, so your first morning on the mountain starts on the slope, not queuing at a rental counter.

How Much Does a Ski Holiday in Georgia Cost?
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
This is where Georgia genuinely stands apart. Expect:

  • Daily lift passes around $27
  • Ski or snowboard equipment rental around $20-30 per day
Compared with Alpine resorts, that's often less than half the price for comparable terrain and facilities - which is exactly why so many UK, UAE and South African families are now choosing Georgia over their usual European ski trip.

Planning a Ski Holiday to Georgia from the UK
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
Georgia has become considerably easier to reach from the UK. British Airways and easyJet now fly direct from London (Heathrow and Luton) to Tbilisi, cutting the journey to around 6.5 hours; connecting options via Istanbul or European hubs remain available too.

Visa: UK and Irish citizens can visit Georgia visa-free for up to 365 days - no paperwork required beyond a valid passport. Rules can change, so we always recommend confirming current requirements with your local consulate before booking.

Good to know:
  • English is widely spoken in Gudauri and Tbilisi
  • No special vaccinations needed
  • Book early for Christmas, New Year and February mid-term departures - this is peak season

Planning a Ski Holiday to Georgia from the UAE
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
For UAE-based families, Georgia is remarkably close: direct flights from Dubai take around 3.5 hours, with several airlines running frequent routes.

Visa: UAE citizens can enter Georgia visa-free for up to a year. UAE residents (non-citizens) can stay visa-free for 90 days within any 180-day period. Rules can change, so we always recommend confirming current requirements with your local consulate before booking!

Good to know:
  • Georgia is 1 hour behind UAE time
  • Christmas, New Year and February mid-term are peak season, coinciding with UAE school holidays - early booking matters
  • Winter clothing rental is available if you'd rather not pack ski gear

Planning a Ski Holiday to Georgia from South Africa
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
Georgia is an increasingly popular alternative to Europe for South African skiers - no direct flights yet, but the connections are straightforward and the value is hard to match once you land.

Getting there: No direct routes from South Africa, but Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Qatar Airways via Doha, and Emirates via Dubai all connect through to Tbilisi with reasonable total travel times.

Visa: South African citizens can enter Georgia visa-free for up to 365 days - just a passport valid for your full stay, with at least one blank page. Rules can change, so we always recommend confirming current requirements with your local consulate before booking.

Good to know:
  • The Georgian Lari stretches much further than it would at an Alpine resort, so your ski budget goes noticeably further
  • Georgia is 1 hour behind South African time
  • Winter clothing rental is available in Gudauri if you'd rather travel light
  • Book well ahead of South African school holidays, when demand from this market peaks
  • Beyond the skiing, most South African families extend their stay to take in Tbilisi — the wine, the food, and a city that blends European and Asian influences in a way few destinations do.

Why Book Your Georgia Ski Holiday with Ski Holidays
Irina, Georgia Ski Expert:
I've spent over a decade living and working in the Caucasus Mountains - as a competitive ski racer, a qualified instructor, and now building trips for families who trust me with their ski holiday. I build one trip at a time, personally, for families coming from the UAE, the UK and South Africa.

Every package includes private airport transfers, ski-in/ski-out accommodation in New Gudauri, equipment rental and ski or snowboard lessons arranged with instructors I know and trust, all sorted before you land - so the only thing left to plan is which run to take first.
