Saberdze Pass and Altihut
This hike is a great chance to see the part of the route to the top of Mount Kazbek. The path will start from Gergeti Trinity Church (alt. 2170m), throught Saberdze pass (alt. 3000 m) and will lead us to Altihut - a mountain shelter at the alt. of 3014 m.
ABOUT THE HIKE
We will start our hike from the magnificent Trinity Church of Gergeti at the foothills of Kazbek at an altitude of 2,170, from where a rather steep ascent along the ridge with incredible views of Kazbek awaits us.
After Saberdze pass (height 2950 m) the trail will smoothly lead us to Altihut - a mountain shelter at the height of 3014 m above sea level. Here is one of the base camps of mountaineers who are going to conquer Kazbek.
We can ascend a little further and the mountain path will lead us directly to the Gergeti waterfall and glacier tongue - from here Kazbek will be so close that it seems that you can already “feel” it! Or just stop for a delicious lunch at Altuhut before heading back to Gergeti Church.

It's always a good idea to leave early but in case of this hike, it is particularly important.
Thanks to its prominence, Mt. Kazbek attract clouds. Don't be lulled by sunny, bright morning and lack of clouds, it won't stay for long. By 10 am, the mountain usually develops "a cloud cap"- at this time, we should be at least by the Gergeti Trinity church and ideally even higher.
